Now he is twelve, and there are more than four thousand photographs in the archives. These aren’t going anywhere.

But taking pictures of a twelve-year old is different than taking pictures of a newborn, or a toddler, or even an eight-year old. A twelve-year old is independent enough not to need a parent at every playdate, and old enough to not want a parent along all the time. The life of a twelve-year old does not generate photo ops nearly as effortlessly as that of a younger child.

Twelve years, I think, is long enough to be in constant pursuit of pictures, enough for three hundred and sixty five new good ones every year. Since Matthew was born, I’ve taken more than 56000 photographs, the vast majority of which are in support of the Matthew and Peter pictures of the day. That averages 90 a week, whittled down to the 14 pictures that had have made it to the blogs.

I am not entirely giving up, though, on compiling a photographic record of Matthew. But, now that he is twelve, now that the summer, with its photo-generating trips and activities is winding down, I’m announcing that the Matthew Picture of the Day will become the Matthew Picture of the Week. The URL will stay the same.

Posted: August 20, 2019

This photoblog started November 10, 2007, when Matthew was three and a half months old.
